Shigeru Ban, the famed Japanese architect of the Metal Shutter Houses, presented his plan for 361 Broadway on Tuesday and won unanimous approval from the Landmarks Preservation Committee. Ban’s design calls for a 23-foot-high addition to the rooftop of the quintessential cast iron building located on the corner of Broadway and Franklin Streets in the Tribeca neighborhood. The building itself recently received a full restoration at the skilled hands of Jan Hird Pokorny Associates, and the interiors will soon house 12 luxury residential units, each a duplex with a private internal staircase. The penthouses will also be duplexes, with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms each, wrapped in Ban’s signature moveable glass walls and access to wraparound terraces.
